Our mindset is an important part of how we filter our lives. Building resilience is all about seeing the bigger picture. Expanding our perspective goes a long way toward developing this skill.
For years, I have used this method when working with children. The Next Best Thing Method involves asking a simple question when we feel stuck. When we see a huge mountain of obstacles ahead of us, it can be difficult to move forward.
As adults, we may learn to move through it, but we may still feel stuck when making decisions. Focusing on the next step can remove that overwhelm and create resilience to seeing a situation from a different perspective.
Something simple to ask when you're having a hard moment can make all the difference. The Next Best Thing Method helps children focus on the solution instead of focusing on the problem.
When we feel stuck, we can ask what is the next best thing:
Do I need to speak to someone?
Do I need more information?
Do I need to find a quiet place to be?
These question will help build long term resilience because it will eventually form their inner dialogue. Prompting them to make decisions that feel good to them and tuning into their thoughts and feelings.
